"Clydell did." he answered flatly, "Released her in hopes that she would cooperate and threw in the blades as an incentive." He checked his rearview mirror and grimaced, "Hence the main reason they started this case so late, and haven't let any word of it leak out. They were hoping not to have to admit thier mistake and hoping that it would all just go away."
He made several turns through the grid of streets, eachtime looking into the mirror with a growing irritation. "Hang on." He began to accelerate and weave through traffic, "I don't need this." he mumbled as he ducked in front of a moving van.

"Ah, Clydell, the one who had her admitted to the program in the first place. I see. Are you certaint that this is a sanctioned investigation? They don't send Merkov and his operator after anyone for no reason..."
She snorted, insulted "Merkov...they think I"ve gone soft. So, spill it, which part isn't sanctioned?"

"Yes, he's the one who threw her in. Irony at its best." He growled as he peeled around a corner. He turned to her even as he pushed the car faster, "Merkov is after me, as far as they know you've been transfered upstate."
He turned back to the road in time to swerve around a line of cars and through an intersection, "Right now the only part of this that's sactioned is my use of the car." He glanced at his watch, "Never mind."

She smiled, lips twitching in an unguarded expression that was gone in a blink "You remind me of someone...I think it shall be worth keeping you alive. Tell me, you brought weapons for me right? And please tell me you are an operator...I'll need one after so long"

"Under the seat in the back." He answered, ignoring her other question to barrel down an alleyway.

Nina glanced at him, layinga cool, thin hand on his shoulder "I need an operator. If you aren't trained as one, tell me now so I can give you a crash course. TRust me."
After saying this, she eeled into the back seat and dug around for the weapons. Her eyes lit up at what she found He sure did read my file A four foot blade with a spine sheathe intact...three razor wires and knives.
"Tell me now" she murmured as she suited up.

He spun the car in a tight circle at the end of the alley and pulled into a side outlet immediatly cutting the engine. The black vehicle blended into the shadows perfectly there and he waited for those following to pass.
"No, I've had training in a variety of fields, weapons, fighting styles etcetera, but never as an operative."

She crawled back into the front seat, crouching there like a living shadow. "Now, you are an operative. The person you reminded me of was my operative, so that will help. Normally, we would use a radio ear piece to keep in touch, but I won't be going far, so no need. I will go rapidly through all the levels to Stone killer. I will kill until there are no weapons drawn against me."
She cracked her neck, loosening her spine in the process "It is your job to talk me down as it were. When I'm done and I'm looking for a new target, you need to show yourself. Unarmed, hands up, and keep talking to me. Thta's the important part. Talk about anything, as long as you don't scream or show fear. Got it?"
She gripped his shoulder again, sadness in her eyes "Our operators are the most precious things in the world, I will not harm you, I swear."
That said she rolled the window, preparing to climb onto the roof.

He nodded, rapidly learning everything she was telling him and wondering when this had been a good idea. "Alright," he replied as she prepared to leave. He accepted the responsibility and watched as she left.

She slid up onto the car roof, balanced on the balls of her feet as she crouched in the darkness. Swiftly she dragged all of her training to the fore, feling the crystal clarity and cold logic of what she called the death dancer. The monster inside.
She could hear the following car slowly drive down to the end of the alley and stop, door opening...they were going to search on foot. Perfect. With an easy spring she was on the emergency escape above car, waiting.

He heard the footsteps and sat waiting in the car. Expression cool and form relaxed as they drew nearer.

Nina watched Merkov stalk closer to the car. He was a threat...already had his signature garrote out...and someone important was in the car...she couldn't remember who...
She let him get within five feet of the conveyanc before dropping like silent death from the railing she had been perched on.
She kneed him hard and quick then rolled away from the impact. No need for the large blade, the knives were out in her hands as she crouched, silent still.
It was an eeriley quite match. Merkov stood up and turned to face her in his slow deliberate way. He had always relied on strength rather than agility, and that was going to get him killed.
They circled, feinting...Merkov had changed his weapon to blades as well. With a bull rush, he came upon her. She ducked under one swing and plunged the blade into his leg. They broke apart and circled again. Another charge, and she scored his knee, making his leg buckle, but he scraped along her ribs.
She had him immobilized though, with a bad knee he had no hope of dodging...she simply threw her blade home into his neck and watched him fall. It had taken mere minutes.
Slowly she retrieved her blade and turned her head towards the end of the alley...Merkov's controller...she smiled and headed down the alley, the predator within dominant.

The signal died. He cursed to himself and pulled his gun out, carefully sliding up against the wall and sinking into the shadows. Merkov was down and chances were whoever had done it was out there looking for him now. Damn you Miller, he thought bitterly of his target. He had gone rogue and it should have been a simple takedown. But if the man had taken out Merkov...he pulled the hammer back on his gun and waited.
*****
Watching her fight he went over the operator instructions in his mind again. When she left he exited the car to look over Merkov. He reached into the dead man's coat and pulled out an envelope. He rifled through its contents and tucked it away, looking down the alleyway for Nina.

Nina froze in the shadows, a familiar, metallic and oily smell drifting to her nostrils. Gun she identified.
A gun changed things...it needed a distraction...
The new target was standing near his vehicle. How kind of him. She aimed for the far tire, knife slicing through the thick rubber effortlessly. The air escaped with a bang not unlike a gun shot.
She watched the man turn to face the noise for a mere moment and in that time she moved. An ebon shadow she stood beside him, blade jabbing through tender flesh to his kidneys.
With a viscious yank she pulled the blade upward then free, feeling the familiar wash of heat as blood covered her hand. She briefly contemplated stabbing teh man again, but the wound would kill him. She kicked his gun away and waited.

The bang was loud but he kept his composure, waiting a few seconds before leaving the car. As instructed he came out into the open, hands up and searching for Nina. "You done?" he asked, already preparing the words he would say to bring her down when he found her.
